New Park on 140th   & Water Reservoir in Bridle Trails State Park – Loretta Lopez

The BTCC has been involved with the City in the design and planning phase to build a new water reservoir in BT State Park. The City will remove the old reservoir and build a new reservoir. The City has advertised for construction bids which will open for bids on February 25th. The City hopes to start construction this summer.

As a result of a Park Levy the City allocated funds for parks in the City. The BTCC advocated for a park in the Bridle Trails area. After many years of working together with the City, the City purchased the property at the corner of NE 24th and 134th . That property became the Bridle Trails Corner Park, which opened in 2014.

The BTCC recommended cost saving suggestions for the BT Corner Park in order to save enough money from the Park Levy to acquire another property. The BTCC Park Committee continued to look for property after the BT Corner Park was opened.  The BTCC Park Committee found another property located on 140th which adjoins a wetland owned by the City. (BTCC member Christine Hemnes found the property by checking property records.)

The BTCC once again worked with the City and advocated for acquisition of the property. The City purchased the property on 140th. The BTCC Park Committee worked with Scott VanderHyden of the Parks Department and together conducted multiple public planning and design meetings. Upon completion of the design, the City planned for construction in 2020. Due to covid the construction was postponed.

The City now plans to begin construction the 2nd qtr of 2022. If all goes well the 140th  park  will be completed in 2022. It will  be a beautiful park with a play area, parking, and a large grass lawn area overlooking the wetlands. The BTCC will be asking for suggestions for the name of the new park.
